"No! I have to do this, Tenshinhan! For all the people of Earth, our friends, and especially you!" |
Chaozu (餃子, Chaozu) (usually called "Chiaotzu" in the English dub) is a white-skinned, red-cheeked little human who is constant companions with Tien Shinhan, his best friend. Just like Krillin, Chiaotzu does not have a visible nose. He is first introduced near the end of the Fortuneteller Baba Saga in the anime. Back when he was a Crane School student, he formed a rivalry with Turtle School student Krillin for a while in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. Along with Tien, he quickly switches sides after seeing the folly of his master's teachings, and becomes a trusted ally and Z Fighter. He is a fairly quiet, but brave psychic martial artist who is willing to help out his friends whenever possible and is highly devoted to his training with Tien.
In DBZ Abridged
Interestingly, Chiaotzu is the first character to be voiced by two different voice actors. In Episode 6 (No One Ever Listens to the Magical Dragon ), he is voiced by Frolegend. Since then, however, he has been voiced by Megami33 . Chiaotzu hasn't recieved that much character development in DBZ Abridged yet, but a few things about him have been fleshed out. It is implied (by Yamcha and Krillin) that he is gay and that he and Tien are in some sort of relationship.
He has a high-pitched voice, and due to this and the red circles on his cheeks, he was believed to be a Pokemon by Nappa. Nappa threw a pokeball at him because of this. Becoming the second Z Warrior to die against the Saiyans, he blew himself up against Nappa, believing that he could be wished back to life with the Dragon Balls. When Tien informs him that this is not the case, it is already too late.
In Season Two, he appears to be doing fairly well in his training with King Kai. Tien regards Chiaotzu as a son of sorts, and he tries to tell Chiaotzu what to do. Also, in the second FAQ special, he answers the question: "Can I be part of DBZ Abridged? He answers that they could as soon as the person grows some "fricking" talent, and he promply tells that person that they suck, but he is reprimanded by Tien.
Later on, during the 2011 Christmas special, he is revealed to be Jewish along with Tien Shinhan, and he is thought to be an elf by Jinga and Beru in the "Christmas Tree of Might" movie special.
Towards the end of Season Two, Chiaotzu has more of a role, correctly guessing that Freeza used the same technique that he tried against Nappa, "only this time it worked". We also learn that, should Chiaotzu die a third time, he gets a free sundae.
Chiaotzu has made a few appearances in Season Three. In Cold Cuts , his relationship with Tien is fleshed out, as he is told he will only get to to McDonalds if he behaves himself. He was also left at Kame House, and served everyone (even Oolong) pork ramen.
