"I... hate... all of you!"
— "Nappa's Best Day Ever"

Raditz the Runt (ラディッツ, Radittsu) is Goku's older and much taller brother, and the eldest son of Bardock and Gine. He is the opening antagonist in the DragonBall Z Abridged series (as well as the first Saiyan seen on screen (apart from Goku himself) and one of the first characters seen onscreen). He was one of the four known remaining Saiyans left alive after his home world was destroyed. He originally seeks Goku in order to recruit him to conquer more planets, but then decides to kidnap his nephew Gohan.

He is a relatively minor character (even less so than Yamcha) in DragonBall Z Abridged. However, he has major prominence as Son Raditz (孫 ラディッツ, Son Radittsu) in Dragon Ball R&R where he is the husband of Lunch and father of Ranch (and Future Ranch in an alternate timeline) and father of precocious and fun-loving brothers Daikon (black-haired older twin) and Mooli (blue-haired younger twin).

In the anime[]

In the original anime, Raditz is Goku's older brother and a mid-class saiyan who comes to earth to re-employ Goku (who has lost the memory of his early childhood) to the Planet Trade Organization, revealing Goku's alien origins and setting Goku's ultimate destiny in motion. He was killed in battle with Goku and Piccolo, by Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon.

After Goku dies, Bulma and Krillin remove Raditz's scouter from his corpse. Bulma modifies the scouter so it can display numbers rather than the alien symbols that are used by Frieza's forces. The scouter later explodes when Goku powers up during his fight with Vegeta.

In Dragon Ball Z Abridged[]

Background[]

Raditz

Raditz with his manga colors

In the abridged version, Raditz is childish and immature (though not as much as Goku; but both of them are less rash than a typical Saiyan), usually throwing a fit and shouting when he can't get his way. However, he is otherwise similar to his anime counterpart.

As a child, Raditz was almost completely ignored and given rough mistreatment from his father Bardock (aside from a few moments like gifting Raditz with the red armband that he once wore), which led to his bratty behavior. However he was scared and insecure, he thought that if he had failed a mission- he would be labeled a deserter and punished and that Bardock would kill him for that but also thought that his strong and caring mother Gine would defend him like she always does, he liked comparing her to a lone rose, in a bed of swords (i.e. the other female Saiyans; Lunch is 50/50), though Raditz didn't think much of his younger brother at first. At some point, fear enveloped Raditz. Fear of Frieza, the Ginyu Force, even of his "comrade" Saiyans. He was alone, he was nothing, he was worthless, useless, powerless, Raditz was a failure. A mid-level, expendable weakling. Because of his suffering of child abuse and trauma by them, he thought that he would never be able to stand on the level of those monsters and followed. After his planet was destroyed, a new thought had arisen.

Raditz; "I am a low-class, but I'm a Saiyan! Father said that we Saiyans were the greatest of all races in this universe. Mother said anything can be done with a Saiyan's true resolve! I may be a coward and a weakling, but I will be a symbol of a true Saiyan warrior." Forced to follow orders and work under the evil, self-obsessed, and ugly tyrant known as Freeza, he was mocked and insulted relentlessly by fellow Saiyans; Vegeta and Nappa as well as Frieza's elites, for being an average mook and being the son of the man that doomed the Saiyan race. Nappa would often antagonize him with the words "Guy who's as strong as a Saibaman says what?" and Raditz has always considered Prince Vegeta to be an ungrateful snob and spoiled brat.

Arrival on Earth[]

Upon arriving on Earth, he encounters a farmer who, at first, mistakes him for Sonic the Hedgehog (due to Raditz’s long spiky hair). The farmer fires his gun in self-defense, but Raditz catches one of the shells and flicks it back at the farmer (accidentally killing him) for being a "bad human". When he realizes what he has done, he mutters to himself "So this is why Dad wouldn't let me keep Appule." He later finds Piccolo (who he confuses with his brother because of their similar power level) and prepares to attack him, announcing "...my signature attack, Double Sun-!" Suddenly, the film pauses and TFS members Lanipator and Vegeta3986 can be heard arguing over the real name of the attack. 3986 wins and begins the film over, voicing Raditz and saying "Keep your eye on the birdie!" Raditz's scouter then picks up a second power level, now higher than Piccolo's, and he leaves him confused and alone.

He eventually finds Goku at Kame House, reveals his past and kidnaps Gohan, telling Goku to destroy the Earth or lose his son.

Goku and Piccolo engage him in battle in the Break Wasteland to rescue Gohan. He is surprised to see them shedding their clothes before the battle, leading him to believe that "nudity makes you stronger on this planet", and unzips his fly, catching the rescuers off guard. When told that Goku and Piccolo wear weighted training clothes, he hastily re-zips his fly, embarrassed (Piccolo implies this is partially because of Raditz's small penis.) During the fight, he uses a blast to sever Piccolo's left arm and pummels Goku, while Piccolo charges his Special Beam Cannon. Twice, he is able to trick Goku into releasing his tail by asking "Pretty please?". He crushes Goku's ribs and is headbutted by an angry Gohan whose hidden power is awakened.

Death of Raditz[]

When he prepares to kill Gohan, Goku puts him in a full nelson and tells Piccolo to fire his beam. Both Raditz and Goku are impaled by the attack. As Raditz lays dying, he curses that he had no way of dodging the beam. Piccolo reminds him that he could have flown away, to which Raditz uses the last of his strength to scream "DAMN YOU, HINDSIGHT!!!".

In Otherworld[]

After Raditz’s death, Nappa tried to contact him and even press his trigger "Guy who's as strong as a Saibaman says what?". Nappa realizes what happened when Raditz doesn't answer, due to the fact that that insult usually gets the desired result from Raditz.

In the afterlife, Raditz physically assaulted King Yemma and escaped his clutches because Yemma "didn't keep his eye on the birdie", in Hell, he vandalized the Fountain of Blood (which was in fact, originally filled with water) by filling it with actual blood. He is apparently aware of everything going on Earth, given that he can hear Vegeta mocking him even after he died. Raditz's stint as a renegade soul came to an end, however, when he, in attempt to continue to evade the authorities of the afterlife, tried to escape by running along the Snake Way, but he tripped and fell into Hell again, where he was captured by Goz and Mez.

However in Cell in a Hell he returns to hell, and gets kinda nervous when Cell does Nappa on him. He later becames the housemate to Cell (along with Guru)

In Xenoverse[]

Raditz was the first opponent Dumplin fought on his Time Patrol missions, it appeared Dumplin was struggling against him but this wasn't the case as Dumplin was going easy on him so he can see and get a clear understanding of Goku and Piccolo and Raditz's power at the time, once he finished analyzing, despite transforming into a Villainous form, Dumplin easily dominated Villainous Raditz. Later Dumplin tried to learn Raditz’s moves but he did offer him a mission.

In Dragon Ball R&R[]

Taking place between WHAT IF RADITZ TURNED GOOD? PART 7 and PART 8, Raditz appears alongside the Z-Fighters during the peaceful time after the destruction of Majin Boo with his wife Lunch, his daughter Ranch and his precocious and fun-loving twin sons.

SSJ Raditz and Late Teen Present Ranch (by PhilVzQ)

For the most part, Raditz is cautious and his overall personality seemingly reflects his canon counterpart's, albeit he appears to be far more childish, immature, paranoid, insecure (due to his upbringing as Bardock thinks that Gine's tenderness and cautiousness made him soft, and hanging out with the much stronger Vegeta and Nappa) and more of a dirty coward who bullies others than he does in the main series while also fearing risking his own life and having more concern for self-preservation and having a careful attitude, having only a few traces of Saiyan honor. He nonetheless still has pride for lower-class warriors as well as his family and is shown to be far more serious and intelligent than Goku (admittedly that's not really saying a lot since Raditz originally thought that power meant everything). While proving to be cunning, resourceful, logical and strategic, Raditz is a coward and an asshat because he was forced to follow orders and work under Freeza, Vegeta and Nappa.

Raditto: The Potara Fusion of Goku and Raditz (by malikstudios)

Unlike the main Raditz, who at least outwardly appeared to be prideful, condescending, and arrogantly believe himself to be an equal to Nappa and Vegeta in terms of status, this version of Raditz appears to be fully aware of what his fellow Saiyans truly think of him, even stating that he hates his former comrades whilst in the afterlife. He underestimates weaker opponents and will not finish them and instead toy around, and if the opponent gets the better of him he cheats and resorts to sneaky cowardly tactics to avoid further damage and possibly death.

"Why would Kakarot use such a horrid tactic to defeat me? Didn't he fear death? Did he know he could just be wished back or was he really willing to die there and then just to win? What would our parents think? Would they think his tactic is foolish or honorable?" The contempt-filled Raditz has a superiority-inferiority complex, a oedipus complex, has always hated being called a weakling, and since his childhood seeked validation. Raditz never lost fights against huge threats since he runs away from them and lets the stronger Vegeta and Nappa deal with them, he only beats the fodder (AKA people that are weaker than Raditz) because he knows he can defeat them and win meaning that Raditz never tried to fight against strong opponents, nor get the chance to receive Zenkais; hence he stays weak. He is extremely resourceful, having brutally kicked King Yemma in the balls in order to escape being sentenced to Hell for eternity and is the only villain known to do so.

Raditz turned good-0

Raditz turned good sprites (by TheGhostSpiriter)

In WHAT IF RADITZ TURNED GOOD? and DragonBall R&R, Raditz is redeemed, gaining bravado, showmanship, shrewdness, and became boisterous. He becomes more laid-back, playful, a bit dorky, somewhat airheaded, a slightly pompous goofball, a jokester, a roaster, and quite the ham, so much so that he can sometimes get carried away, like with his stories he'll sing songs... while also forgetting certain important story details causing him to appeal to his own biases, make up fake stories, exaggerating moments and other people (like "Superhero Bardock" and "Scaredy cat Vegeta"), all to conveniently build himself up (particularly, but secretly his self-esteem) and put on a show for entertainment purposes. While he can sometimes get competitive, he still retains a lot of his element of snarkiness, as well as be sarcastic and have cynical comments. After he settled down on Earth, he became Master Roshi's student and went through his Turtle School-style training routines, including the Milk Run, so he could learn about what made his younger brother stronger (as well as repay for the damage he caused to Kame House when he smacked Krillin through a wall with his tail). He wears his hair tied in a ponytail (via Roshi's suggestion so that his hair wouldn't fall in the milk bottles on accident (Lunch sometimes helps tie it on)), sheds his Saiyan Armor's shoulder pads, and adopts the bottom half of Goku's Turtle School Gi as his clothing attire. His eyes evolve to resemble Goku's more, symbolizing his redemption and turning good.

He keeps his Saiyan honor and refuses to have his tail cut off due to his childhood memories and respect/excitement for his Saiyan heritage, since he doesn't want to insult his race by having it removed, it's one of the remnants of his race that he hasn't lost. It takes him a while to get over his animosity towards his brother for "betrayal". Both Goku and Raditz fight together on a lot of occasions, with Raditz being the mature, responsible brother to Goku, who is very foolish (though Raditz sometimes gets jealous over the fact that the younger and more pure-hearted Goku gets away with his mistakes and doesn't get in trouble, unlike Raditz). Their Metamoran Fusion is the blood brothers' fusion known as Goditz, while their Potara Fusion is Raditto.

Since Goku and Raditz are more closely bonded than Goku and Vegeta as well as being actual brothers (aka being blood-related and having the exact same genetics), the Family Boost gained from their natural compatibility makes Raditto greatly surpass the Rival Boost that Vegetto gets. This resulted in Raditto easily manhandling and humiliating Super Boo, even when the latter managed to unlock the power of Gohan's Ultimate form.

After his potential was unlocked by Super Kami Guru, Raditz (during the 3-year training period before the arrival of the Red Ribbon Androids) would later achieve Super Saiyan during a confrontation with Vegeta (afterwards, Goku taught Raditz how to manually transform without having to become extremely aggravated). In Future Trunks' timeline, Future Raditz managed to keep a few more people alive because he had absolutely no problem cutting and running when things looked bad, and thus survived far longer than the other Dragon Team members to keep holding the Androids off. That all goes out the window when #17 murders Future Lunch, which makes Raditz so enraged that he fights despite being outmatched and ends up dying to a double-team attack from #17 and #18.

In the main timeline, he later mastered Super Saiyan after intense meditation and training with Piccolo and Future Ranch in the Room of Spirit and Time), Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan Blue (later becoming the second Saiyan to unlock Perfected Super Saiyan Blue after Goku).

Raditz turned good and Bad Lunch MasakoX TFS Team Four Star Dragon Ball R&R Super Z Abridged

Raditz forms a close friendship with Piccolo, appreciating Piccolo's level-headedness (Piccolo is the first member of the Dragon Team he meets, after all), since they were both loners for much of their lives before coming around and joining the Dragon Team; both of them have their fair share of sarcastic, snarky comments as well as cynicism, he sees Piccolo as one of his most trusted friends, a frequent training partner and vice-versa, as well as seeing him as a more noble version of his father Bardock.

Raditz (this exemplified more so after fully learning and understanding what makes Piccolo tick, the circumstances with his father Piccolo Daimao, and mental training via hardcore meditation with Piccolo) gets over being jittery, his cowardice, his paranoia and controls his temper so he doesn't get into petty and violent squabbles with Vegeta (as Raditz actually stands up to Vegeta and all his "Saiyan Elite and Pride" bluster. Raditz gets riled up whenever someone insults his family, be it directly or indirectly, with Vegeta using this to his advantage during their final bout so that Raditz would stop holding back and start fighting seriously). Finding peace, becoming braver and an increased rationale within himself, he becomes more intelligent, level-headed, focused, pragmatic and determined. At times of peace, Raditz really has a sense of humor.

Raditz and Lunch end up becoming a couple, having first met a few months after the Goku-Freeza fight on Planet Namek and during Raditz's Milk Run training with Master Roshi and Krillin (with the explanation that Good Lunch liked Raditz because he reminded her of Goku, while Bad Lunch liked him because he's a bad boy that can stand up to her. Raditz likes Bad Lunch because she's got that fiery temperament and resourcefulness which can reign him in (a strong will and physical strength that Saiyan men find so attractive (Raditz likes it when Bad Lunch is angry and they play rough as if they're Super Saiyans when they are in bed together)) and she looks like a Super Saiyan, he likes Good Lunch as her motherly, cool, calm and collected, passive demeanor, kindness and compassion influences and rubs off on him, which reminds him of Gine. He'll praise her when she makes a good pun. During their past-times, Raditz would take Bad Lunch to bars so she can drink, and they like to prank one another. The two, along with Ranch, wear red accessories (Raditz's arm and leg bands, Lunch and Ranch's bows). The relationship between Raditz and Lunch is such that neither party acts the same. When one is panicking and the other one is acting chill (like when Raditz was in complete shock of how small and precious Ranch was back when she was a newborn baby).

As the two are forgotten characters, Raditz and Lunch have a lot in common, found each other relatable and bonded over robbing a bank. Afterwards, Lunch explained her insecurities and her past to Raditz such as why she switches personalities whenever she sneezes and how the world defined those traits of her as being weird, treating her like a freak as well as a lonely low-life thief. Raditz related to this and stated his past defined him as being born a lonely mid-class Saiyan who was seen by the rest of his superiors as nothing but trash; hence they both view the world with negative outlooks on life, and they both used to be involved in criminal situations/organizations. Later on, after living together for so long, they have learned to grow past their insecurities and not let other people's negative opinions get to them. Bad Lunch was the one that suggested that Raditz get a job in street fighting.

(Raditz talking with Bad Lunch at Kame House at midnight) "Look... I'm not the best at this. But, I can understand. Whether you're a girl with 2 different faces against the world or an alien born to be garbage against an evil empire, the world is a rough place. And even though I don't know a lot about you... we could change that if you'll talk to me."

(After Bad Lunch kissed Raditz on the cheek wishing him a good night) "Huh, maybe there really is a reason Kakarot felt at home on this planet. I could get used to this kind of living."

Raditz is the type of person that will at times call people by the nicknames he gives them: Goku ("Brother" or "Little Bro"), Piccolo ("Green Man"), Gohan (Runt and later "Nerd"; same as Piccolo), Vegeta (Spoilt Brat), Lunch ("Snookums" and "Dear") and Ranch ("Darling").

Raditz is incredibly proud of Ranch, who he allows to train with Goku, Gohan (who she looks up to), Trunks and Goten, but his pride soars to new heights when he finds out that she secretly learned the Fusion Dance behind Goku's back; Raditz always wants to set good examples for her. As they can be too knowledgeable for their own good, they appear to be unable to see the problems with their actions and share the flaws of being prideful and arrogant. A huge example of this is when Raditz gives Goku a Senzu Bean during the Tournament of Power despite the use of healing items being against the rules, an act that could have potentially resulted in Universe 7's erasure had they been caught cheating.

Raditz vs. Vegeta: Rivalry and Hatred[]

The Raditz-Vegeta rivalry is the Dragon Ball equivalent of the Sanji-Zoro rivalry from One Piece, with Raditz being Sanji and Vegeta being Zoro as they are constantly competing and surpassing each other, with the way Vegeta acts, behaves towards, and treats Raditz like he's small, insignificant, low-class, and easily disposable, the prince has a similar personality to the standoffish Bardock except far more arrogant, petty, spoiled, and lacking even more manners. However, as they are Saiyans, this rivalry is played for drama and is even more prevalent and aggressive than even the Goku-Vegeta rivalry (which is only one-sided on Vegeta's self-proclaimed part and due to Goku being a very different type of Saiyan, he ultimately doesn't want to fight to defeat others but instead to overcome himself and always surpass his own limits. As such Goku actively seeks new challenges and rivals). Raditz and Vegeta's Metamoran Fusion is Radgeta and their Potara Fusion is Vegitz.

Like with Goku, Vegeta labeled Raditz as a waste of oxygen. However, when the Legendary Super Saiyan Broly goes on a murderous rampage after Cooler kills Paragus, Vegeta demands to perform the Fusion Dance with Raditz, due to him not wanting to let Goku get the glory and Raditz telling him that Bulma, Ranch, Goten and Trunks will die if they don't do something to stop Broly.

The Dragon A-Team and the Dragon B-Team Bridger[]

Raditz's role is that of a multi-tasker that he has to flip-flip on: he's both one of the top heavy hitters as well as being an assist in smaller roles such as saving people. The problem with this is that he tends to get stuck in conflicts and make things harder for himself, until he gets a lucky break and eventually manages to fix things.

Attacks[]

In Dragon Ball R&R, Raditz taught his daughter Ranch these techniques.

  • Keep Your Eye on the Birdie! (AKA Saturday Crash): A one-handed energy sphere attack. It was originally called Double Sunday until Vegeta3986 took away the mic from Lanipator. Attempted to be used against Piccolo, but didn't use it when he sensed Goku.
  • Double Sunday: A double-handed attack that fires two energy waves from both hands. First used against Goku and Piccolo during his fight against them. The blast caused Piccolo to lose his left arm.
  • Dynamite Monday: A vicious combo of punches and kicks culminating in a roundhouse kick to the head.
  • Shining Friday: A close-range variant of the Saturday Crash. One of Raditz's most powerful attacks.
  • Wednesday Kamehameha: Acquired from his Turtle School-style training with Master Roshi and Krillin, later putting his own spin on the move.
  • Super Wednesday Kamehameha: Raditz's version of the Super Kamehameha.
  • Vacation Delete: A variant of the Saturday Crash that has the ability to paralyze opponents.

References[]

Throughout the rest of the series, Raditz is referred to, usually as a gag. His name is mostly used to refer to things that are weak, small or of little worth.

  • When speaking through the dead Raditz's scouter, Nappa says "Guy-who's-as-strong-as-a-Saibaman says what?", referring to Raditz's power level of 1,400- which was roughly higher than a Saibaman.
  • When asked by Goku about Raditz's afterlife endeavors, King Yemma says that he put Raditz in his "Yemma Lock", but was kicked in the balls, allowing the Saiyan to escape (to which a cut-away of Raditz plays, saying "He didn't keep his eye on the birdie!"). Goz and Mez also state that he made a mess of Hell's blood fountain (which used to be water).
  • After killing the Arlian's "Rancor", Nappa states that it must have been made of something weak "like paper mache... or Raditz."
  • After revealing the Saibamen, Vegeta explains that they have almost the same power as Raditz. "That's right. He was so weak, we could literally GROW Raditzes!"
  • Nappa's scouter measures the Z Warriors' power levels in terms of "Raditz". Gohan is worth the equivalent of 0.8 Raditz, Piccolo is worth the equivalent of 1.1 Raditz, and Krillin is worth the equivalent of 0.9 Raditzs.
  • Nappa refers to Krillin as "the Raditz of their team". Later, Raditz is compared to Yamcha in terms of being completely useless.
  • After Krillin kills three Saibamen, Vegeta mocks "Congratulations. You just killed the equivalent of three Raditzs. Nappa here is worth 4 Raditzs and I'm worth 13 Raditzs." Nappa consoles Krillin (ineffectively) by noting that he is at least better than their Raditz. Another cutaway of Raditz plays, saying "I. Hate. All of you!"
  • In Bardock, The Father of Goku: Abridged, when the doctor recommends Bardock visiting his newborn son, Bardock denies at first, stating that he never paid attention to Raditz either. The doctor then mutters "Oh yes...and we all know how he turned out...", causing Bardock to change his mind.
  • During the Namek Saga, the Ginyu Force hint that "Raditz" a form of currency in in the space organization ("credits" are, apparently, also a form of currency in space, as Freeza claims that 400 credits were spent on Zarbon's phone bill).
    • The announcer for the Spacey's commercial mentions a "Raditz Menu", a parody of McDonald's dollar menu. The scene also depicts 2 sundaes on a tray, likely referencing Raditz's "Double Sunday" attack in video games.
    • After hearing about Guldo's death, Ginyu says that Burter now "owes him 50 Raditz."
    • In a later episode, when Freeza finishes using Goku for a game of pinball when entering the initials "ASS" into the high score screen, the bottom of the screen reads "New Game: 1/2 Raditz."
  • In Two Saiyans Play while Nappa and Vegeta are playing the game Magicka, they come across a field of Radishes to which Vegeta responds "It's an entire field, of Raditzs." Nappa quips "Watch as we don't pay attention to it and walk away." Vegeta says "Yup." Nappa proceeds to drink some water and remarks "He was the worst." Vegeta finishes with another "Yup."
  • In Two Saiyans Play: Dead Space 3 Part 2, Vegeta says, "They're so easy to kill, it's like...it's like running into a planet full of Raditzs."

Trivia[]

  • He was the first character to initiate the "Krillin Owned Count" by tail-slapping Krillin through the wall of Kame House.
  • Vegeta stated to Krillin that the Saibaman Krillin killed, that Nappa and him were the equivalent of 4 and 13 Raditzs respectively, but commended him for at least being stronger than the latter.
  • This line was later referenced in the Freeza saga where Gohan stated that Freeza´s power level was the equivalent of 100 Vegetas.
  • Raditz's "signature attack" was never given an exact name in the original series. However, like most unnamed attacks in Dragon Ball, the attack has been given several unofficial names by the various video games in the series. Some of which is "Here's a Present", "Keep Your Eye on the Birdie" and "Saturday Crush". "Double Sunday", the name that Lanipator uses, is actually the name of the dual-energy blast that Raditz uses to sever Piccolo's arm. This explains the argument between Lanipator and Vegeta3986, as the name "Keep Your Eye on the Birdie" is preferred among fans.
  • Lanipator voices Raditz up until the infamous part where he and Vegeta3986 feud over the name of Raditz's one hand energy attack, wherein Vegeta3986 voices him up until his last cameo in Episode 8. In Kai Abridged, he is voiced by Lanipator once again. It jokes that he remained as Raditz's voice actor due to the nature of the episode and how it skipped over that part, although the real reason is that Vegeta3986 had left the team sometime after.
  • When he encountered King Yemma in Otherworld, King Yemma put Raditz in his Yemma lock, but Raditz kicked King Yemma in the balls and ran away, causing Yemma to lose him. Raditz is now in Other World somewhere as a fugitive.
  • Currently, he is the first and only known person to ever escape King Yemma, while others have likely tried in the past, he is the only known successful escape attempt.
  • Ranch's name (named after Ranch/Salad Dressing) was chosen by Blonde Lunch after she beat Raditz in a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors. Despite Raditz wanting more of a Saiyan name, he knew better than to mess with Bad Lunch.
  • Raditz is a terrible artist because he has no drawing skills so he's limited to drawing stick figures.
  • Raditz's hair is always. on. point.
